Mr Andrew Ballaro MSc, MD, FRCS (Urol) is Consultant Urological Surgeon at The Wellington Hospital. He consults at both the Diagnostic Centre and the Platinum Medical Centre and specialises in the management of all urological problems such as blood in the urine, urinary infections, prostate cancer and bladder problems, and has a major surgical interest in the management of kidney stones.
Mr Ballaro has been a full time NHS Consultant Urological Surgeon for nearly 10 years and is the both the Lead Consultant for the urology service and the Clinical Lead for stone surgery at BHRUT NHS Trust, a large trust in North East London/Essex. He was previously Consultant at the Royal Free Hospital. He performs over a hundred and fifty complex laser and keyhole operations to remove kidney stones per year, and in the National Surgical Outcomes Audit (NHS Choices website) he is consistently one of the highest volume surgeons in southern England with the some of the best surgical results in the country.
In his practice at the Wellington Mr Ballaro provides a comprehensive urology service and is dedicated to offering the most suitable procedure to patients on an individualised basis. He is approved by all major insurance companies and is supported by a highly professional on-line practice management team, which enables easy patient access to results and further medical advice by email.
In terms of training, Mr Ballaro qualified from The Royal Free Hospital Medical School, London and undertook basic surgical training in Oxford. He achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of London in 1999, and after being awarded both a Masters degree in Urology and MD in Clinical Sciences from The Institute of Urology at University College London completed higher urological training on the North London Training Scheme. He received further advanced training in complex stone surgery and laparoscopy from nationally and internationally recognised experts. He is entered on the GMC Specialist Register.
In addition to his clinical interests, Mr Ballaro has an interest in Urological Education and a research interest in minimally invasive surgical techniques and the basic science of bladder dysfunction on which he has over fifty publications. He was awarded a Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2004 for his work on bladder dysfunction. He is teaches trainee urologists at all levels and is co-author of the latest edition of the standard medical student textbook 'Lecture notes in Urology'.
