Dr Edward J Despott is a consultant gastroenterologist and advanced gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopist whose specialist interests include device assisted enteroscopy (double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) in particular), capsule endoscopy (CE), therapeutic colonoscopy (particularly complex polypectomy, large endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)) and transnasal upper GI endoscopy. He is also interested in the diagnosis and management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other digestive disorders.
Dr Despott is regularly invited to speak and perform live endoscopy demonstrations at national and international meetings and has undergone dedicated advanced endoscopy training in Japan. In 2007 he was also awarded a prestigious advanced endoscopy scholarship at the Wolfson Unit for Endoscopy, St Mark's Hospital and Academic Institute (a World Endoscopy Organisation centre of excellence) where he spent a total of 3' years, during which he also undertook research on advanced endoscopy leading to the award of MD(Research) (Imperial College London).
He continues to be actively involved in academic endoscopy and is a faculty member of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) guidelines committee for small bowel endoscopy. Dr Despott has published numerous (>20) scientific peer-reviewed papers, review articles and several book chapters and is a referee for scientific journals of high impact. He is the Trust-wide clinical lead for endoscopy at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, is a member of the BSG, ESGE, ASGE and ECCO and is an elected Fellow of the European Board of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
