Professor Howard Branley is a fully accredited NHS Consultant in Respiratory & General Medicine providing specialist diagnosis and treatment for a broad range of respiratory, chest and sleep disorders. He has been specialising in respiratory medicine for more than 15 years and sees patients with cough, wheeze, breathlessness or snoring. He has expertise in a wide variety of lung diseases particularly asthma/bronchitis, chest infection, sleep apnoea, tuberculosis (TB), pneumonia, sarcoidosis, lung cancer and pleural disease e.g. pneumothorax and pleural effusion. He is expert in fibre-optic bronchoscopy and in the interpretation and reporting of lung function tests plus overnight sleep studies for suspected sleep apnoea.
He trained in world famous London teaching hospitals including The Royal Brompton, The Hammersmith, St Mary's and Charing Cross Hospitals. During his postgraduate training he obtained a Master of Science with Distinction in Respiratory Medicine (MSc) followed by a Doctorate in Respiratory Medicine (MD), both at the National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College London.
He has published extensively and lectured on respiratory medicine in the UK, Europe and North America. He co-authored a chapter in the latest (5th) edition of the seminal medical textbook, the Oxford Textbook of Medicine.
In 2013, Professor Branley was appointed as Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), a role that involves the assessment of pilots (professional & private) and air traffic controllers with respiratory problems. He is the only Consultant in the UK to hold this prestigious post.
