Nick Cheshire is Professor of Vascular Surgery and Head of Circulation and Renal Sciences at Imperial College & Imperial College Healthcare. He is a founder member of the British Society for Endovascular Therapy and former council member of the Society of Academic & Research Surgeons and the Vascular Society.
He is a current member of the organising committees of the Charing Cross International Vascular Symposium in London, the Multi-disciplinary European Endovascular Therapies (MEET) in Marseille and Controversies-Updates in Vascular Surgery in Paris.
Nick Cheshire's clinical and research interests are in the application of technology to complex arterial disease. He has pioneered stent graft repair of thoracic and thoraco-abdominal aneurysms in the UK, reducing peri-operative mortality by up to 50%. With colleagues in Bio-engineering at Imperial, the team have developed a novel helical stent and helical prosthetic arterial graft, less susceptible to kinking & fracture, and with advantageous fluid mechanical properties. The Imperial Vascular Unit's simulation program includes a system that allows mission rehearsal prior to carotid stenting and a fully functional simulated cath-lab suite, the first of its kind. This expertise has been translated into VR teaching programmes in New York and London.
Other research programmes include robotically controlled endovascular intervention, showing improved control and easy learning for inexperienced surgeons and combined fluoro-CT endovascular navigation.
This research has won prizes in the UK, Europe & the USA and the development of a spin out company to manufacture and sell the helical graft & stent.
