Mr Culpan returned the UK to join Bart's and the Royal London 3 years ago to start a pelvic and acetabular reconstructive trauma service. The Royal London is renowned as a specialist centre for major trauma and treats more patients with severe injuries than any other centre in the UK. The pelvic trauma service has rapidly developed to become one of the busiest in the country and utilises the very latest techniques in minimally invasive pelvic surgery.
He also has an interest in managing the related trauma particularly to the lower limb including the management of high energy injuries and open fractures; fracture non unions and infections.
Elective Hip Surgery
Mr Culpan has a particular interest in minimally invasive total hip replacement surgery. He combines a muscle sparing approach which he experienced during his one year fellowship in Paris, with the latest techniques in planning surgery to ensure an accurate anatomical replacement. His experience is that this has led to a more rapid recovery and higher functional level experienced by his patients. His service also includes complex primary and revision hip replacement surgery often following trauma or previous failed hip replacements.
Elective Knee Surgery
Mr Culpan has a large elective practise in both knee replacement surgery and knee sports surgery. He spent nearly 3 years working as a consultant in the UAE gaining a comprehensive experience and expertise in operating on the 'Arab Knee'. His current university hospital practise includes all forms of knee sports injury surgery including ACL and multiple ligament knee reconstructions.
Mr Culpan qualified in Medicine from the University of Manchester in 1996 having previously completed a BSc from the University of St Andrews. His post graduate basic surgical training was undertaken through Bart's and the Royal London surgical rotations. Following this he entered higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the University College London rotation. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Tr & Orth) in 2005 and completed his completed his higher surgical training in 2007.
He spent a one year fellowship in France working at the famous orthopaedic teaching centre in Garches, Paris. During this year he gained particular expertise in minimally invasive hip replacements and revision hip surgery.
Following this he moved with his family to Abu Dhabi where he spent two and a half years working as a consultant in the largest public hospital in the country. He specialised in knee sports injuries, knee and hip replacements, lower limb trauma and pelvic and acetabular trauma.
He returned to London in 2010 to join Bart's and the Royal London Hospital where he works as a consultant specialising in pelvic and acetabular trauma.
