Mr Somers undertook specialist surgical training at St James's Hospital Leeds, St Mary's Hospital London, and Prince of Wales Hospital Hong Kong. He has held professorships in Hong Kong and at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was appointed consultant specialist surgeon in 1996.
Mr Somers has a specialist interest in the surgery of stomach and oesophageal disorders and has pioneered many keyhole techniques in the UK. He has established and directed a major upper gastro-intestinal unit at Portsmouth, a major hospital (1100 beds) on the south coast.
Over the last twelve years Mr Somers has also developed and managed one of the most successful practices of Obesity Surgery in the South of England. He has a personal experience of over 2200 bariatric cases and employs a full multidisciplinary team for patient care. Currently, his specialist Unit performs over 500 obesity procedures per annum and provides services for both NHS and Private patients.
He has developed new techniques for managing failed or complicated Bariatric procedures and is one of the few 'revision' (re-do) Bariatric surgeons in the UK. Mr Somers is a member of council for the British Obesity Surgery Society.
